About Rachael

Hi there! I’m a portrait photographer and writer based in Washington State. I love capturing faces, places, and things. I would love to work with you whether you need an updated headshot, want to memorialize a special moment, or are looking to create fun portraits together.

When I was a teenager, I borrowed my mom’s 35mm Canon Rebel that she used for family photos in the late 80s and early 90s. I knew nothing about aperture, ISO, or shutter speed; I was simply taking photos of my friends hanging out in the parking lot of the movie theater where we worked and dropping off the film at Rite Aid.

Within a few days, I’d have a thick packet of photos and feel exhilarated as I peeled the top of the envelope apart, separating a soft, spongy layer of yellow adhesive. There was nothing more satisfying than preserving those memories and learning how different lighting scenarios changed the feel of each photograph.

I started taking photography more seriously when I moved to New York in 2018. I was inspired by my friends and roommates who worked as lighting techs, fashion photographers, and videographers for major outlets. I enrolled in classes at the School of Visual Arts and the International Center of Photography in NYC to demystify techniques like strobe lighting and effects. I enlisted friends and family as models and assistants, turning weekend trips and lazy afternoons into photo sessions.

Today, having relocated to Whatcom County, WA, in the Pacific Northwest, I continue to learn and hone my skills at every opportunity by attending workshops and connecting with models. I practice by taking self-portraits so I understand what my subjects experience on the other side of the lens. To me, the greatest compliment is when people see their true selves in my photos, not an overly retouched version. I want you to walk away from our shoots feeling empowered, with a positive moment preserved in time.
